A transmission electron micrograph image of numerous HIV virions.

HIV is the virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. CDC estimates that about 56,000 people in the United States contracted HIV in 2006.

There are two types of HIV, HIV-1 and HIV-2. In the United States, unless otherwise noted, the term “HIV” primarily refers to HIV-1.

Both types of HIV damage a person’s body by destroying specific blood cells, called CD4+ T cells, which are crucial to helping the body fight diseases.

paper sculptures by an unnown artist

Each sculpture has curiously appeared at different library, bookshop, and museum locations across Edinburgh including the Scottish Poetry Library, the National Library of Scotland, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and theFilmhouse. Each figure uses a popular work of literature to construct surreally detailed figures. Every structure is unique to the book it is made out of and comes with its own message of literary celebration. When the eighth sculpture popped up, it came with a note alluding to the artist being a female, giving a few shout outs (including one to Scott for his pictures), and signaling the end of the journey with a total of ten sculptural works. People, including Scott, eagerly awaited the final two, unsure of where or when they would be revealed.

Toddler received world’s smallest artificial heart as he waited for a transplant
Italian doctors have saved the life of a 16-month-old boy by implanting the world’s smallest artificial heart to keep the infant alive until a donor was found for a transplant.

The tiny titanium pump weighs only 11 grams and can handle a blood flow of 1.5 liters a minute. An artificial heart for adults weighs 900 grams.

Surgeon Antonio Amodeo said the baby had become family and his team wanted to do everything to help him.

“Every day, every hour, for more than one year he was with us. So when we had a problem we couldn’t do anything more than our best,” he said. (Photo: Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters)
